Information & Specs

Mourning Diary will focus on the love shared between Yoo Joonghyuk, Han Sooyoung, and Kim Dokja in either a platonic or romantic context, with focus on the themes of loss, grief, hope, and the strength to deal with all of them. The secondary focus will be their roles as the Protagonist, Writer, and Reader, and the circular nature of their existences. This fanbook will be canon-compliant and is expected to feature primarily epilogue and post-epilogue works, but contributors are more than welcome to pitch ideas for happenings during the scenarios. Why call it "Mourning Diary"?
✦— "Mourning Diary" is a published journal by philosopher Roland Barthes that he kept from 1977 to 1979 following the death of his mother. It is a work that feels unedited, full of ambiguity and repetition– it is, after all, a diary. Within, Barthes details the mundane life of one trying to move on after losing someone they love, and the routines of grief he develops during this.
During the epilogue, in chapter 543, Han Sooyoung references this book during the “Reading modern philosophy through webnovels” class she is teaching. Considering Sing-Shong’s blatant admiration for philosophy throughout the book text, the timing of the reference is a loving callout to the everyday grief experienced by the members of Kim Dokja’s Company and Han Sooyoung specifically.Barthes’ favorite motto was “Larvatus prodeo” (“I advance pointing to my mask”), but "Mourning Diary", with its mundane suffering and the healing power of time, leaves him– and, in turn, both Han Sooyoung and Yoo Joonghyuk– without that mask.TL;DR: It’s a tribute to Han Sooyoung and Yoo Joonghyuk’s “long mourning” and the hope of healing as they continue on, and to the book of the same name by Roland Barthes. Is the fanbook going to be primarily grief/angst?
✦— Ideally, no! While mourning and grief can play a role, since the book will focus mostly on epilogue and post-epilogue works, it does not need to focus only on the aspect of “misery”. These can be portrayed in many ways, as well: it’s easier to get inside the characters’ heads in writing, but art can be largely symbolic if the artist desires! For post-epilogue works, hopeful and even mundane domesticity is appropriate as well.

Moderators

Pepper (any pronouns) — Co-organizer, lead mod, writing modYo! I’m Pepper. Mourning Diary is my first time moderating a fanbook project. My experience includes Discord/forum/chat moderation and some IRL project management. I’ll be collaborating with the other organizers to answer questions and solve problems, as well as handle pitches, beta/critique, and editing for writer submissions.

Rook (they/them) — Co-organizer, social media mod, art modI’m Rook! I’m an artist that’s been around the fanzine/etc crowd for a while (Undertale, MP100, Pokémon, Ace Attorney… etc!). I have a lot of experience as a contributor, and have recently forayed into moderation as the lead mod for THEMA; an ORV zine. I’ll be closely assisting Pepper with Mourning Diary!

Tange (they/them) — Co-organizer, finance & production modHello, I’m just a little guy (Tange)! This is my first time as a moderator for finances & production, but I’ve been selling fan merch for some time and more recently, organizing GOs. I have experience as a page artist in several Naruto fanzines, some upcoming ORV fanzines, and my own solo zines. I also run two online shops and table at conventions a few times a year! Spreadsheets are my best friend 🤝
